A Perfect Game Wreck N Crew

Team APG/WreckNCrew:

Jan 29-30th the 'Crew participated in the 29th annual March of Dimes Sno*Ball Tourney in S.Lake Tahoe. It was the latest, most successful event for our fledgling team. "We'd been participating in regional tourneys for a little over a year, always putting up a good fight, but with limited success." (the best finish being a 7th place tie at Reno's Smoke Tourney in September).

Starting the 2011 season in Tahoe at the popular Sno*Ball event was a challenge since there were 4 local teams competing. Everyone was scrambling for talent, but we built around our core players to field quite the formidable team!

The 'Crew went 4-2 for the tourney, surprising many by quite convincingly sending our first four opponents to the losers bracket.

When asked for standouts, co-mgr Lisa Duggins(DH, injured reserve) and I really have to emphasize that everyone on the team played an integral part in our success. Some of the highlights being lead-off hitter Brad "Barbie" Wyatt scoring 4 in the park HRs to begin our first 4 games and infielders Kandi Young, Shannan Moon & Nancy Alstrand picking off lasers that went screaming thru the infield, then whipping them over to pitcher turned 1st baseman, Adrienne Henslee.

The outfield, though challenged by hot bats & poor footing, fought tooth & nail to overcome the majority of our opponents. Everyone gave their all, as evidenced by an impressive diving catch made by Amy Borrego while her husband, center fielder Brian Borrego backed her up. (Photos to come) The rest of the outfield was made fairly inaccessable by the hustling talents of Gregory Calleson, Saxon "Oops, I hit another homer!" Thomas and Suzanne "Test my arm...I dare you!" Morse!

Rounding out the defense was Allen Young, stepping up to lock down the hot corner after the BFI proved that he really couldn't fly, then pulled himself from the game defensively.

Offensive leaders were Saxon Thomas & a surprisingly productive BFI, both hitting for power & average. Everyone earned an equal share of credit for our wins by hitting well enough to even put a scare into the team that ended our run to the championship; battling to a narrow defeat of 5-4 by the 1st runner-up team.

We're proud to say that our ladies led the way, gamely fighting to overcome the absence of power hitter (co-mgr) Lisa Duggins, who is recovering from knee surgery, with the strong hitting men driving them home.

The team, generously sponsored by APerfectGame, strives to be a positive force in the game, emphasizing above all else, Safety (No Hot Bats!) & Fun!

Look for us in the coming year, in the local WNCSSA coed league as well as at several regional events.
