The first ball I ever hit with the Miken Recoil (MSRMU)-(the USSSA Recoil, orange, 250 DFR) was a line drive right to the second baseman. I barely ran out of the box because I saw it go right into his glove. Well, the glove came off his hand and the ball shot all the way out to the right fielder. This bat had the plastic wrap on it just a few seconds earlier. I thought, “WOW,” just wait until it gets broke in a little. It has become my USSSA bat of choice. Great pop, great durability, great feel and a very cool metallic paint job. If there is a down fall to this bat it is the grip. So many of my teammates used this bat that the grip wore down in about a month. The MSRFA (the ASA red Recoil ) took a little longer to come alive, but did it ever. One of the coolest advantages to both the Recoils is the Dynamic Flex Ratio or “DFR”. The Recoil comes in two different flexes - the 180 flex is a balanced bat and the 250 flex is more end loaded. The 180 flex is for the batter that is hitting the ball with a slower swing speed and the 250 flex is for the masher who swings out of his or her shoes. If you are maxing out at around 250 feet or less, you should try the 180 flex as the handle will flex more, creating a better kick much like a golf shaft. If you are hitting the ball 250 feet and up, you will need the 250 DFR. This stiffer handle/shaft will not flex as much as the 180 and will result in longer ball flight for the hard swinger. This really shows through when the over 50 league guys demo the 180 DFR. Some of them have said things like, “It hits like an Ultra II!” Well, it does not hit like an Ultra II but the 180 shaft will increase the ball speed off the bat for people with slower swing speeds. Also, the fact that the 180 DFR is a balanced bat it should turn into a faster swing speed resulting in a hotter ball off the bat. The 250 DFR should be used by the stronger player that can handle the end load which will punish the ball better so long as you can swing it as fast as the balanced version. The ASA version is a 98 mph bat and has been grandfathered in for legal play in ASA. The 2008 ASA bats are in high demand as ASA has changed its standards to have slightly less pop in 2009. Also the 2009 bats will not get more pop the more you use them, like the 2008 and earlier bats do. It remains to be seen just how much less pop the new generation ASA bats will have, but one thing we do know for sure is that once the 2008 ASA bats are gone, they will be gone forever, so get them while you can! The USSSA version will be available for at least another year. I highly recommend all four versions of the Miken Recoil. If you have any questions regarding which Recoil you should be swinging just give us a call at our toll free number and we can help you choose.
